This is a well thought-out backpack designed for carrying dogs up to 25 lbs (-11 kg), such that they can remain in a natural horizontal position. Key features include large mesh zippered side panels, YYK locking zippers, a removable padded floor, and adjustable hip belt and sternal straps.
The backpack appears to be very well made and its base is comfortable and sturdy, crucially supporting a dog without the bottom sagging. The zippered mesh windows allow a dog to peak its entire head out and experience the world, while the built-in tether prevents escape. The padded shoulder straps, hip belt, and sternal strap make for a comfortable human-user experience.
The drawback for us was that the interior might get hot or sunny or hot days.
Overall as a first impression, the DjangoPack appears to be a very well made and well designed dog carrier backpack with a sturdy platform for carrying small dogs on outdoor adventures, in public transportation, and during everyday excursions.
Inspired by dog owners whose own dachshund was recovering from spinal surgery, the DJANGO DjangoPack dog carrier backpack was purpose-designed and created for carrying dogs in a natural horizontal position. With a body weight capacity of up to 25 lbs (-11 kg), the DjangoPack can accommodate a variety of small dog breeds, including dachshunds, pugs, corgis, and French bulldogs.
The backpack is designed for hiking, sightseeing, road trips, everyday use, and for travel that doesn’t require it being placed on its side. It is not designed for under-seat in-cabin airplane travel.
Features include large mesh zippered side panels, YYK locking zippers, a removable padded and washable floor, support straps for the base, external pockets, a water bottle side pocket, an internal laptop sleeve, padded and breathable (human) back support, and adjustable hip belt and sternal straps.
We received the DjangoPack backpack from DJANGO at no charge, for the purpose of doing an unbiased first impression review. We have used the backpack for the past two weeks, taking River on short hikes, and into dog-friendly stores.
Our initial impressions were that this is a well-made and well-designed dog carrier backpack. I naturally can’t yet comment on durability, but the seams, stitching, and zippers all appear to be of excellent quality. (In my experience those are the most telling aspects of pet carrier’s durability, especially where the shoulder straps attach to the top of the pack. That attachment point can be quick to fail if not well made.)
One of the most well-thought-out parts of the design are the internal diagonal straps, which run from the front panel to the floor. These are adjustable and can be tightened to prevent the floor from sagging under the dog’s weight, thus keeping it in a flat, horizontal position.
For ventilation, the sides of the backpack are compromised of a sturdy mesh, each with a zippered panel that opens and can be rolled back and secured in the open position. These “windows” allow a dog to stick its head out and look around. While the interior leash keeps them tethered to the pack.
The backpack contains an optional rigid panel to insert at the top, imparting stiffness to the top of the backpack and increasing its interior volume. This panel can be removed in order to store the backpack flat.
The interior front panel contains a laptop sleeve. I suppose this lets the backpack double as both a dog carrier and a work backpack – although I’m not entirely sure how high the demand is for that dual purpose. Nevertheless, there’s a generous pocket for a laptop, and two zippered exterior pockets for additional items.
The side of the backpack contains a mesh pocket with elastic, for storing poop bags or a water bottle. While this is a great place for poop bags or other small on-the-go items, keep in mind that if a water bottle were placed here, its cylindrical shape would bulge into the backpack and that might be uncomfortable for a dog to lie against.
River, who weighs 10 kg (22 lb), was curious to check out the pack and she entered it with ease through the large side window. Note that the rear panel also fully unzips, offering another entrance and exit option.
When wearing the loaded backpack, the base is comfortable and sturdy, supporting a dog without sagging. This is a crucial part of a dog’s comfort and also reflect’s the pack’s durability. The padded shoulder straps, hip belt, and sternal strap also made for a comfortable human-user experience.
A dog’s comfort is first and foremost. River had plenty of room to sit up, lie down, and turn around at will. Subsequently, she very willingly got back into the backpack without any prompting.
Note that the DjangoPack is not designed for being used on its side. Accordingly, the front panel is not structured to prevent sagging when the pack is placed on its side. This may be relevant for those planning to do in-cabin airplane travel. DJANGO says there is a carrier currently in development for airplane use.
The DjangoPack’s drawbacks for us were related to potential heat exchange. Due to its black exterior, this backpack might heat up more quickly in the sun compared to a lighter colour. Additionally, while the side panels are ventilated, the front panel is solid. This limits the pack’s ventilation, and may add an insulating effect to the backpack.
As a first impression, the DJANGO DjangoPack appears to be a very well made and well-designed dog carrier backpack with a generous and sturdy platform for carrying small dogs in a comfortable position. Due to its dark colour and limited ventilation, it may have a tendency to get hot on sunny or hot days, so keep that in mind. Overall, this is a comfortable and sturdy backpack for letting your small dogs join you on outdoor adventures, in public transportation, and during everyday excursions.
